An important component of Hairspray is the struggle to overcome the injustice of prejudice. A central aspect of this is a portrayal of the American Civil Rights movement. Naturally this involves some of our Japanese actors playing African Americans.
The portrayal of an ethnicity other than Japanese is not new to BW. Last year in Aida, we portrayed both black Africans and Egyptians and we’ve often played white characters in other past productions. (We even had a green character in one of our shows!)
For Hairspray, we’ve very consciously chosen not to use makeup to either lighten or darken our faces. We feel to do so in this show, would harken back to days when racism was openly accepted. In America, though there still remains a long way to go to consign racism to history, the theatrical use of ‘Black Face’ has long been unacceptable.
We hope that our portrayal of all ethnicities will be respectful and realistic enough to allow our audience the opportunity to enjoy the show and to appreciate the important message that no one should be limited by prejudice, whether it be about skin color, body type or other difference.
